Nas - Hip Hop is Dead

After long thought and some laziness I am finally beginning the album reviews on the site. I love music, and have been and avid listener of Hip Hop since an early age, this will not be the only music I review but the only music I have a very deep connection with. With that said here goes...

When I first heard of Nas' new album coming out I bought the XXL magazine with Nas on the cover, I was shocked to read his interview responses saying "Hip Hop is dead, so fuck it, let's bleed the bitch and make our money" I was kind of pissed and not that excited at all to hear the album. The album came out 2 weeks early through illegal means and I got a copy from my #1 Hip Hop download source (good lookin out Kalig). I sat back and listened, jaded from his interviews before the album drop, I really hated every song except "Where Are They Now" and "Can't Forget About You".

Then out of no where he starts doing more interviews in better spirits, maybe because album sales were good, or maybe because older rappers started responding to his question "where are they now?", and he did a complete 180. The the remixes of "Where Are They Now" came out, and it seemed like Nas inspired a resurgence of, well, real Hip Hop. The album started to make more sense to me. He talks on the album about how he can't really do what he wants because the days of lyricism are gone, he is forced to dumb his music down. There are some really good tracks and some really terrible ones. The production is quite bad but very relevant to todays market of mainstream Hip Hop. The best way to put it, is the album is good for todays state of the rap game, but if you are an Illmatic fan it is one of his worse efforts. In the end the album entitled Hip Hop is Dead (purely named to cause controversy and push record sales in my opinion) may have just saved Hip Hop music.

Now the track by track...

"Money Over Bullshit" - this is your typical hard beat, dope rhymes, a couple little shots at Dip Set , and young rappers who are trying to get famous by dissing a veteran. The chorus is pretty ill, not catchy but nicely put together lyrically.

"Can't Kill Me" - terrible beat, sounds like some wack ass disco video game music, the lyrics are pretty shitty too, I mean dude is talented but he really just doesn't bring it on this track, this is more of the "Escobar" Nas, and the chorus is really wack too. Fast Forward>> for sure.

"Carry on Tradition" - the beat is weak, but lyrically it is one of the best songs, I love the difference he shows between the O.G.'s of the game and the young ones. He also talks about the reasons why black people are always beefing rather than working together. The basic message, carry on tradition from the old days and know the game you are in. Goes at them young rappers hard on this one. Chorus is ok.

"Where Are They Now" - dope beat, basically just a shout out asking where all these 80's and 90's MCs are now. One of the greatest tracks on the album.

"Hip Hop is Dead" - Nas reuses the beat from his street single of his last album entitled "Thief's Theme" which was an ill track. I just can't excuse this. Get a new fucking beat man, plus Will I Am made it all super soft and R&B sounding, his breaks are cool and at the end when the sample is gone it actually sounds like a different track and like it had some potential. As it stands I do not listen to this track, it's an FF>> for sure.

"Black Republicans" - Great beat, but it over powers the lyrics and competes with the MCs too much, I think the sample should have stayed but had a pitch change or just a filter over it to make the drums and the lyrics stand out more. Poorly produced. Jay-Z's verse is better but both verses aren't all that great.

"Not Going Back" - it's actually a good idea for a song, considering where Nas is at now, living in LI with his wife. The beat is a piano that is maaaad played out, and the intro is embarssingly bad. His flow is sloppy, and it's got kelis on the hook, not anything special, I'll give it a big FF>>.

"Still Dreaming" - the beat is dope, a typical Kanye West production, but Kanye should not be allowed to rhyme on a Nas album. His verse is terrible he barely rhymes using the same word "out" at the end of most of his lines. To put it simply he sucks and ruins the song for me. The over all theme is pretty weak. FF>>.

"Hold Down the Block" - sounds like a real soft Dr. Dre knockoff but it's tolerable. Lyrics are ok, I don't really get it. If he had a message it is lost. FF>>.

"Blunt Ashes" - is horrible, probably one of the worst, the beat is depressing and a bouncy track so Nas sounds sloppy as hell on it. I only listened to it a few times to review it. The lyrics are good but the flow sounds like some "it's my first day on the mic" shit. FF>>.

"Let There Be Light" - Another sample that sounds familiar but it works great for the theme of the song, the first line is tight, "Let there be light, no gang banging in NY tonight" it's a positive song, and it is good, lyrically tight, flow tight, and the message never gets lost.

"Play on Playa" - this uses a well known Marvin Gaye sample that I used back in college when I had dreams of Rap stardom. I think Ice Cube used it for an interlude as well. The track is dope, it is what the title says, plus Snoop came correct. I think Snoop smashes Nas on this track, hahaha. Just one of those tracks that bumps well in the whip.

"Can't forget About You" - I really love this sample, it is that old NY sound that makes me reminisce. Chrisette Michele really sounds ill on the hook, and the sample coming through towards the end of hook is genius. Another homage type track but it doesn't get tired for me. Flow and lyrics are on point on this one. The best line of the song "never on scheduele, but always on time."

"Hustlers" - Dr. Dre on the track, typical hard Dre beat with Nas rocking some generic rhymes, the Game completley ruins the track, he just sucks all around, but especially on this track. He should not be allowed on Nas albums, period. So I listen to Nas' verse then I give it a good FF>>.

"Hope" - Contrary to the title of the album and the message repeated through out, Hip Hop will never die, but it's dead again, according to this track. Lyrically the best track on the album hands down. Thankfully no wack ass producer was allowed to touch it, straight acapella goodness.

And that is it, I know it was a bit late but whatever. Peace.

Apparently a few directors are making Faux trailers to appear in front of Grindhouse trailers. Eli Roth is the first one to debut Thanksgiving online and it is violent. It looks like some old Friday the 13th trailer and is hilarious, and gross, be warned. It's got dude from Terminator in it for two seconds, hahaha, and the narrators voice is perfect.

Strech and Bob most definitely were the best hip hop radio show of all time, and I remember the night they ended it. NYC - I still call it home

I recently went back to NYC for a mini vacation, I checked out NY Comic Con briefly (the people that run that show are fucking assholes), and fashion, and kicks, and I hit up my favorite bar The Orange Valve. If you are looking for a hip and chic bar in NYC do NOT go to Orange Valve. If you have a good group of friends and would like to go to a place where the staff treats you great then head to the O.V.

Anyway I bought some kicks, sneakers were off the hook in Feb. I easily saw 10 pairs I wanted to cop on the spot, luckily I showed some restraint and bought only two pairs. One being the super fly Court Force Lows I got @ Clientele (Prince & Lafayette, sorry no web site)...

The other I could lie about and say I got them at some out of the way boutique but I got them at Journey's on 34th street from this fly latina chick with a lower lip piercing. Anyway these are tight and for some reason Journey's (and every other chain in the world) is always better in NY...

I also had a chance to head down to the L.E.S. to check out Reed Space THE FLYEST store for designers, fuck streetwear, you can find that anywhere. This store is owned and run by someone who has impeccable taste in all things design, it is a must see when heading to NY. Most of my friends in NY don't even know about it. Anyway I copped an issue of Also Known As (12oz Prophet)which is just a cool slick graf mag with some dope pieces in there...

While I was downtown I got to go to ALIFE they had some dope kicks but I didn't want to spend anymore cash, shit so did Reed Space come to think of it. Fashion for men was terrible everywhere, streetwear is just stagnant right now, maybe it's all the blogs I read but either way it was wack.

Women's fashion was amazing in the L.E.S. every boutique I went to had something new and fresh for the ladies. Lots of Vintage fabrics being used in great ways, plus boots galore, but I will let my other correspondent expand on her shopping experience. She "dreams of boots" all day long and that will be the title of her column/blog. Her blog will be kicking off on scatterbrainmag.com very shortly, be on the look out.

T-shirt Rack w/necksaver is quite possibly one of the greatest inventions ever, and it is easy to construct. I have not built one yet due to space issues in my apt. but it is something I will be building once I move. I don't know if you ever shy away from buying a tee that is on a hanger, but I do. There is nothing worse than a streched out neck on a tee, it drives me crazy. This tee rack solves the problem. The website says put tees on after drying but you can dry them on there too. Keeps those perfect fit tees from shrinking.

Apparently a Posh Upper East Side Antique dealer has decided to sue some of the John and Jane Doe homeless people that use the grate in front of their store to warm themselves during the winter. The man pictured above is the major culprit. The store said he obstructs the view of a "$26,000 19th-century mahogany Empire bench from Vienna with lion-head details and cream-colored upholstery". (hahaha) The bum had this to say "Leave me the f- - - alone," he grumbled. "I don't want to be f- - -ing involved." The store is filing a $1 million lawsuit against... these four bums. This is so ridiculous I can't even write anymore, but it is real. Craziness.

Mos Def's "Tru3 Magic" Recalled by Geffen

Apparently the Mos Def album I picked up at Target (with nothing but a CD in a blank plastic case) is now being called a "Pre-relese" and all current CD's on the shelf are being recalled. The album currently resides on the Billboard 200 and sold 11,000 copies it's first week. One of the tracks on the album was nominated for a Grammy, yet they still are pulling it. I guess someone at Geffen Records fucked up big time. The album sounds more like a mix tape than an album and it is impossible to find credits for the album online. I thought it was pretty dope for a mix tape, and compared to most major hip hop releases today I found it to be enjoyable. If you want to hear a copy amazon is still selling them as of last week, and some people may be willing to share the tracks via AIM, ya heard. I would love to hear comments from Mos on this one. Get at me.

Afro Samurai - Anime from the RZA

The show looks dope, and the first episode can be viewed on SpikeTV.com through their crappy ass stream, it's choppy but you can see that the animation is up to par with some of the best in Japan (let it load for a minute before playing it). It looks like a cross between Samurai Champloo and Ninja Scroll. Peep it here. The RZA is doing a soundtrack for the show, which sounds pretty tight, plus Sam Jackson and Ron Pearlman are doing voices on the show.

Stussy 2007 - still bringing the heat

Stussy is a founding father of Streetwear and is still bringing dope designs each season. I think it's pretty rare for a company to stay this prevalent, and this cutting edge after so many years. I was recently looking through some vintage t-shirt books at the old Stussy stuff from the 90's and I saw some designs that were way ahead of their time, some that could have been mistaken for new designs as well. I used to rock Stussy hard when I was a kid, along with Op (Ocean Pacific) and a few other brands I cannot not remember (probably for good reason) but Stussy is the only one keeping up with the trends, and pushing them forward. West Indian Girl

West Indian Girl was introduced to me by a couple of friends, and the first time I heard their music was at a live show at Molly Malone's in LA. They are native (now) to LA and do a decent amount of small shows out here on the west coast. They are signed to Astralwerks, but are not that electronic. I would describe their sound as cooled out drug rock with an electronic touch, the Doors meets Zero 7 or something. They have one debut CD and a remix CD out now, both which are solid the whole way through and can be copped here. I got to see them again last night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, which was a bigger venue than Molly's but still small. They had a nice visual going on behind each song, and they sounded great, except for the encore which consisted of a bad cover and a very self indulgent solo by the female singer Mariqueen Maandig. Her presence on the album is more of a back up singer than a lead, but I have a feeling her strong vocals will play more of a roll in their new album. I would their albums are dope, but their live shows will make you fall in love with their sound.

11 Spring Street - GO THIS WEEKEND!

I'm sure all New Yorkers have seen the famous graffiti covered building on Spring and Elizabeth, it has been sold and the new owners will be completely restoring it, removing all the graffiti from the outside of the building. For the past two months street artists from all over have been preparing a show covering all the walls of the inside of the building. The show opened a half an hour ago, and is running till this Sunday only. If I were back in NYC I would be there, but I urge anyone who can make it to check it out. As of Monday the doors will be sealed and the art will be covered by drywall, serving as a way to preserve most of the art (which is pretty cool). Karmaloop (based out of Beantown - check their store on Newbury) is already a dope online shop to get new underground and overground streetwear, but they have recently introduced Kazbah, which is even more underground, I guess. They have some brands I have heard of and some I have never seen, and its a good place to see more cutting edge graphics in the Streetwear market today. Check it out.

Russell Simmons vs. Blood Diamonds

A week after returning from a fact-finding mission for his Simmons Jewelry company, Russell Simmons is facing criticism from film director Edward Zwick.

Zwick, who helmed the new Leonardo DiCaprio movie Blood Diamond, implied that Simmons is merely a public relations puppet for diamond companies.

Simmons’ recently returned from a trip to South Africa and Botswanna after being invited by the diamond industry's Diamond Information Center.

The mogul concluded that the sale of blood diamonds has dropped to less than 1%, since the Kimberley Process was introduced in 2003 to prevent the trafficking of the illegal diamonds.

During the Blood Diamond premiere in Hollywood, Zwick noted Simmons’ figures and questioned his support of the diamond industry in general.

"I find it embarrassing for Russell Simmons," Zwick told the New York Daily News. "That's a funky number. That number comes from diamonds that are mined in countries that are 'war-declared.' Conflict diamonds are also mined in countries where there is not a 'declared war.' If you want to know about conflict diamonds, you don't go to Botswana and South Africa. You go to Sierra Leone and Angola. … Russell Simmons is being embarrassed."

Simmons has responded to Zwick’s comments and maintains that the film will scare people away from purchasing legitimate diamonds. The mining process of the precious stones have become profitable industries in some African countries.

“This is the arrogance of Warner Brothers pictures," Simmons told AllHipHop.com. "They were selfish self-centered, greedy and hurtful to the indigenous people of Africa. This messaging should have been changed after Nelson Mandela and other African Presidents asked Warner Brothers to change it. Period. I am going to continue to focus on the positive that can come out of this dialogue and work to help empower black Africa.”

Simmons was referring to a letter South African President Nelson Mandela authored, reminding Warner Brothers that some African countries were relying on the stones to rebuild their war torn countries.

The Hip-Hop mogul’s review of the experience came across as positive as he concluded that the diamond business has been a plus for poor residents whose lives have been improved.

Young Jeezy was recently on Monie Love's radio show, questioning how real she was and how much street cred Nas had. I think they are missing the point, and are only further proving Nas' point; Hip Hop really is dead, and if you listen to Nas' album you will find he is trying real hard to kill it.

It's All Good by Boogie

It's All Good is a book by photographer Boogie, who spent the last four years imersing himself in the crack houses of Bushwick Brooklyn and the projects of Bed Stuy and QB. The pictures are raw and real and it is astonishing that this native Serbian, now residing in Brooklyn himself, could get so accepted into all of these peoples worlds. I just got my copy of the book last month and it is worth picking it up. Plus it is supporting an independent art book co. called Powerhouse Books, which is also located in NYC. Banksy is the cliche artist to talk about right now and some of his pieces sell for hundreds or thousands of $'s, but he is a great street artist who always pushes the envelope and makes statements in clever ways. If you are not familiar with his work just google him and you will see what you have been missing. The artist is most likely in his 30's and is British. That is basically all that is known about him as he remains anonymous. Check out his latest work here

The Royal is a magazine put together by the very talented people at the KDU including an aray of designers, photographers, and other artists. I used to pick up free copies at random boutiques in NYC, but now everyone can get there hands on the latest issues (8 & 9) in PDF format. Plus you can read 1 - 7 on their website in a Flash Player format. The issues seem to have much more content now that they are online.

Lil Wayne will be in the next issue of Complex and he has some choice words for Jay-Z...

He had some words for Jay-Z:
“I don’t like what he’s saying about how he had to come back because hip hop’s dead and we need him,” he says. “What the fuck do you mean? If anything it’s reborn, so he’s probably having a problem with that. You left on a good note, and all of the artists were saying, ‘Yo, this is Jay’s house. He’s the best.’ Now he comes back and still thinks it’s his house. But we fucked bitches in your bed already. It’s not your house anymore and I’m better than you.”

We asked if he thinks he’s better than Jay-Z:

Welcome to the beginnings of Scatterbrain Magazine, this is only a beta version and is not final by any means. We just wanted to get this Mag started asap so we are starting with a simple blog format. Please check back often for the latest news in music, art, and streetwear. Plus there will be some great Opinion pieces by yours truly, Mr. Me Too. I have chosen this name because of the negative connotation that comes with it, my opinion pieces might offend many, and I saw the moniker very fitting. Politics is something I try to stay out of and follow so it many pop up as a topic at some point. Since this is just simple blog format I am categorizing each post so topics are easy to find as things are archived.
